CE Subject Requirements

  • Category restrictions:  Courses must be approved for the specific license held.  
  • Course presentation:  Licensees may take self-study online and classroom based approved funeral CE courses. 
  • Study requirements:  Students should read the course material prior to taking an open-book, non-monitored final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

  • Exam proctor requirements:  Louisiana does not require self-study final exams to be monitored.
  • Exam rules:  Self-study final exams are open-book and do not require a monitor. Licensees may refer to the course material as often as needed.  Licensees must score a 70 percent or higher on the final exam to receive credit for the course.  FuneralCE offers students unlimited exam retakes at no additional charge.

CE Carryover Allowance

4 CE hours may be carried forward to the next license term.

Course Repetition Rules

Credit will not be given for the same course more than once during any 2 consecutive licensing terms.

Certificate of Completion

FuneralCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Louisiana. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed.  Licensees should keep all certificates a minimum of 3 years for state auditing purposes.

CE Completion Reporting

Weekly Reporting - FuneralCE reports course completions electronically to the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors every week.

License Renewal Process

Licensees are required to renew their licenses annually on or before December 31st.  Licensees may submit a renewal form (provided by the state) with the required fee to the state.    

Non-resident requirements

Non-resident licensees practicing in Louisiana should complete the CE requirement for their home state, and if requested by the board, provide their certificates of completion as proof of CE compliance.

CE Exemptions

  • First-time license renewals.
  • Licensees who are 65 years of age or older at the time of renewal and who have been licensed for a period of not less than 10 consecutive years.
  • Licensees who have been called to active military duty status.
  • Inactive licensees during any licensing period in which they remain inactive; however, an inactive licensee changing status to an active licensee shall first meet the continuing education requirements.
  • Interns and student interns.
